Department of Planning, Policy & Design

Established in 1993, the Department of Planning, Policy, and Design ranked 5th in faculty research productivity in 2007 among the nation's urban regional planning programs. Our department offers a two-year graduate program leading to a Master's of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and a Ph.D. in planning, policy, and design. The master's program is fully accredited by the National Planning Accreditation Board. The planning, policy, and design (PPD) doctoral program at the University of California, Irvine trains scholars for national and international prominence in the analysis of social problems related to the built and natural environments.

There’s a real change in mentality going on here among developers and environmentalists in terms of what Orange County is. We’re starting to run out of green field, pristine land. So these battles represent the last pieces of the puzzle in the maturation of what now is a pretty fully built-out suburban county.

Graduate Program Application Deadline

Applications to the master's and Ph.D. programs are accepted for full-time study only, beginning in the fall quarter. The application deadline for both programs is Jan. 15, 2008.
