Immigration not tied to crime

A Whittier man accused of attacking his wife had been deported 11 times since 2005, according to an article in The Orange County Register.

But that doesn't represent the typical relationship between crime and immigrant communities, according to research by Charis Kubrin, a professor of criminology, law and society, whose research was quoted in the article. Kubrin has found that crime is less frequent in communities with larger immigrant populations.

"Across our studies, one finding remains clear: Cities and neighborhoods with greater concentrations of immigrants have lower rates of crime and violence, all else being equal," Kubrin wrote in a study published last year in Scientific American that was quoted in the article.
