ASA honors Méndez

Mendez

Environmental Sociology Practice and Outreach Award comes in August

All things considered, Michael Méndez would rather be in Philadelphia – or at least the assistant professor of urban planning and public policy will want to be during the 118th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in August.

That’s because of this missive Méndez recently received:

Dear Mike,

On behalf of the ASA’s Section on Environmental Sociology’s Teaching, Training, and Practice Committee, I am very pleased to let you know that you have been chosen as this year’s recipient of the “Practice and Outreach Award.”

Congratulations! We were truly inspired by your nomination and the work that you are doing. We look forward to celebrating your work at ASA this August in Philadelphia. Do you plan to attend? A formal announcement about the award will go out later this summer.

Best wishes,

Alissa Cordner
ASA Training, and Practice Committee Chair
Associate Professor of Sociology and Paul Garrett Fellow
Whitman College

“This award, given in odd years, honors faculty scholar-activists who demonstrate outstanding practice and outreach contributions that advance equity in the context of socio-environmental relations,” states the ASA website.

No other UC Irvine scholar has received the Environmental Sociology Practice and Outreach Award since it was first given out in 2010. The only other recipient from the UC system is David Naguib Pellow of UC Santa Barbara in 2017.

“I am honored to receive this award that recognizes excellence in community-engaged research,” Méndez says. “It provides acknowledgement of the value of focusing on equity research in collaboration with community stakeholders and policymakers.”
