Water UCI - Academic Coordinator/Researcher

The School of Social Ecology is seeking an Academic Coordinator/Researcher to manage and administer the research, educational, and public outreach programs of the Water UCI center. This position plays a variety of roles including conducting and managing research, serving as educational facilitator and project administrator, generating and managing grants and contracts from various sources, and client liaison. The position also serves as a catalyst for maintaining and advancing UC Irvine's School of Social Ecology's principal water research and science-based educational initiatives.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher position is a one-year renewable term appointment. Performance in this position is evaluated annually; merit evaluations are held every two years. The appointment will be continued indefinitely, dependent upon positive academic review. The position is a fiscal-year appointment with benefits, including medical insurance, sick and vacation leave.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher will oversee and monitor the conception, design, and management of the Center’s research projects and outreach programs. S/he will initiate, design and manage research projects including conceptualizing studies, and identifying and applying for funding. S/he will supervise and train undergraduate field study and other interns at research sites and at local schools and coordinate internship responsibilities and monitor intern performance.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher will also serve to recruit and coordinate participation of UCI faculty and graduate students from departments and centers such as the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Public Health Program, Water Energy Nexus Center, and Center for Land, Environment, and Natural Resources (CLEANR) in the Center’s projects. S/he will also identify collaborators from other universities and research organizations for Center projects undertaken for water agencies, foundations, and other clients. The latter include Orange County Water District, Irvine Ranch Water District, Moulton Niguel Water District, Santa Margarita Water District, CA Division of Drinking Water, and CA Department of Water Resources. In addition, s/he will be responsible for identifying grant, contract, and private as well as public agency funding sources for research and other programs and for identifying potential members for the Water UCI Leadership Board. In addition, the Academic Coordinator/Researcher will be responsible for furthering Water UCI’s educational mission by creating curricula for our continuing education certificate program and Water UCI Water Innovation Challenge program as well as developing new educational programs.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher will develop, maintain and support partnerships between the School of Social Ecology and the various local and regional water agencies, private sector, local, state and federal agency funders, community organizations and other academic institutions that collaborate with, and provide funding for, Water UCI’s principal activities. These partnerships are implemented by developing and managing collaborative research projects, planning and coordinating sponsored events, and developing and coordinating outreach programs via UC Irvine campus visits and various virtual, remote events.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher will also maintain established curriculum and develop new curriculum and outreach materials to disseminate to the campus, local and national community. S/he or she will serve as the primary source of Center communications by developing and assisting in the production and dissemination of content to local, regional, and national communities on Center events including colloquia, research updates, and other activities.

S/he will serve as the main contact for audiences of policy-makers, educators, and others interested in the Center’s activities and will be responsible for Water UCI’s web presence. In this capacity, s/he will oversee and assist in creating social media, website, and email communications; oversee planning and logistics for our public outreach colloquia; and liaison with Water UCI’s external Leadership Board.

The Academic Coordinator/Researcher will produce peer-reviewed papers; plan, construct, and update annual reports, produce abstracts and summaries of research projects for public dissemination; and oversee and prepare updates and presentations at workshops, conferences, and formal talks. Updates are in the form of papers, articles, PowerPoint presentations, and comparable vehicles.

Administratively the Academic Coordinator/Researcher will be responsible for a program budget of about $400K annually. S/he will submit documentation as needed to request funds.
