Doctored photos and videos can create false memories in people of things that never happened. And with the rise of artificial intelligence that can realistically map a person's face onto video of another person's body, humanity's hold on reality threatens to weaken even further.
“The potential for abuse is so severe,” Elizabeth Loftus, a distinguished professor of social ecology, who pioneered much of the research in false memory formation in the 1990s, told Vox. “Once you expose people to such a powerful visual presentation, how do they get it out of their minds?”
