Richard Matthew will kick-off the first “What Matters to Me and Why” event of the 2019-20 academic year on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Richard A. Matthew is Associate Dean for Research and International Programs, School of Social Ecology; Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy; and Director of the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, UCI. He is also a Senior Fellow at IISD in Geneva, a member of the United Nations Expert Group on Environment, Conflict and Peacebuilding, and the Vice-President of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association. He is Co-PI of the FloodRISE and SedRise projects.

“What Matters to Me and Why” encourages reflection about values, beliefs and motivations in the lives of those who shape our university. The series explores personal journeys – choices made, difficulties encountered, commitments formed and joys revealed – with the hope that these stories will help us to understand diverse pathways in life, work and leadership. Such understandings are crucial for fortifying tolerance, strengthening bonds, and supporting the virtues that make UCI a great institution.
