CivicWell supports leaders responding to the climate crisis and its impact on their communities. The nonprofit organization aims to inspire, equip, connect, and cultivate leaders working toward a more sustainable and resilient future.

CivicWell’s fall webinar series returns with experts from a variety of industries and fields providing practical recommendations that attendees can put to use immediately to help their communities. Thanks to support from webinar series sponsor AARP California, attendees can participate in any or all of these webinars for free.

Experts for "Tribal Consultation in Environmental and Land-use Planning" are Michael Méndez, a UCI Chancellor's Fellow and associate professor of urban planning & public policy (UPPP), and alumna Michelle E. Zuñiga ('21, PhD UPPP), an assistant professor of urban and community planning at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Their webinar description:

California was the first state in the nation to enact legislation aimed at enhancing tribal consultation in land-use and environmental planning. Through Senate Bill 18 (2004) and Assembly Bill 52 (2014), state leaders provided an avenue for integrating Indigenous knowledge into local land-use decisions, especially for cultural and ecological sustainability. This webinar will highlight a recent study evaluating the impact of this legislation, identify constraints, and provide practice-based recommendations to assist stakeholders across the nation to improve tribal consultations.
