The UCI Labor Center, the School of Humanities' departments of English and Film & Media Studies and Illuminations: The Chancellor's Arts & Culture Initiative present academics and labor leaders for a conversation about what AI means for the future of entertainment work.
Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are rapidly transforming Hollywood, with profound consequences for the workers and communities that sustain Southern California's entertainment industry. What are the risks of unchecked technological change? How are workers and unions fighting to protect jobs, livelihoods, and the future of the industry?

Banks and Fortmueller co-authored Boom to Bust: How Streaming Broke Hollywood Workers (UC Press, 2026), which chronicles the transformation of Hollywood under streaming, the erosion of established employment structures, and what their research reveals about the workers behind the entertainment.
