Join UC Irvine's Labor Center and Department of Chicano/Latino Studies, as well as the Orange County Labor Federation, for a conversation examining how migration shapes work, families and communities across Orange County and Mexico. The partnerships connecting both sides of the border will also be explored.
In 2024, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo became the first woman elected governor of Guanajuato, Mexico. She later signed a state reform initiative submitted to the local Congress to guarantee full union freedom and autonomy, aligning state legislation with federal labor standards. She emphasized that unions must operate free from pressure or political interference so workers can independently choose their path.
This event's program brings together labor leaders, academics, policymakers, and experts for a free-wheeling discussion. The expert panel includes:
- Gloria Alvarado, executive director of the Orange County Labor Federation
- Glenda M. Flores, professor of Chicano/Latino studies at UCI
- Yunuen Trujillo, directing attorney with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA)
- Moderator Iza Camarillo, research director with the UCI Labor Center
