The U.S. Department of Justice is pursuing a harsher line on immigration offences and drug offences, imprisoning more people for violating immigration laws and seeking longer sentences for those convicted of drug crimes. Mona Lynch, a professor of criminology, law and society, spoke with the Marshall Project about recent Justice Department activities.

Proposition 47 study stirs debate

California's Proposition 47, implemented in 2014, lowered prison populations by reclassifying certain low-level drug and property crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. It has been blamed for rising crime in the state.

So a study done by Charis Kubrin, a professor of criminology, law and society, that found the measure was, in fact, not responsible for the rise in crime was sure to stir debate.
