Repeated Media Exposure to Trauma Worse Than Being There

Roxane Cohen Silver, Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior, recently published a study that found that prolonged media exposure to the Boston Marathon bombings in the week afterward was linked to more acute stress than having been at or near the marathon. Silver collaborated on this study with Alison Holman, Associate Professor of Nursing Science, and Dana Garfin, Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior. On January 30, 2014, Professor Jeffrey Fagan of Columbia Law School was the featured speaker at the third program in the Science to Fight Injustice Lecture Series. Fagan discussed the Floyd case in New York on “stop and frisk” and the professional risks that criminologists face when their litigation work can challenge the privileges and entitlements of police. The Center for Psychology and Law hosted "Rap On Trial” on January 22, 2014. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and Professors Charis Kubrin and Sohail Daulatzai comprised this exciting discussion panel. They addressed the recent practice of using rap lyrics as evidence in criminal cases and the significant implications for how we define creative expression and free speech. Learn More...

On January 24 and 25, 2014 the UC Irvine Alumni Association hosted Homecoming Weekend for alumni, students and community members.
