Chen and Greenberger: Who we are

Chuansheng Chen, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior.

A native of China, I received my bachelor's degree in psychology at Hangzhou University (now Zhejiang University) and my Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where I worked principally with Professor Harold Stevenson. My training and interests are in developmental psychology with a long-term and continuing emphasis on cross-cultural studies of children's and adolescents' cognitive and psychosocial development, especially, "normal" adolescents' mental health and involvement in problem behaviors. In recent years, my interests have expanded to include the transition to adulthood, the cross-cultural study of creativity neural bases of language and mathematical learning, and population behavior genetics. See my Psychology and Social Behavior faculty and research website for representative publications in these areas.

Ellen Greenberger, Ph.D. Research Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior.

A native of New York, I received my bachelor's degree in English at Vassar College and my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Harvard University. Over the years I gradually re-defined myself as a developmental psychologist with strong interests in social psychology and cross-cultural psychology. At the most general level, I am interested in the way that culture, ethnicity, and social relationships combine to shape development and in the factors that sometimes derail healthy development. In particular, I conduct research on family and peer influences on depressive symptoms and involvement in problem behavior in “normal” (i.e., non-clinical) samples of adolescents and young adults; on the predictors of a successful transition to adult roles and responsibilities; and on the nature and consequences of parent- child relationships from adolescence through adulthood. Go to the Social Ecology website for a list of representative publications.
