The UCI School of Social Ecology has a long-standing, international
reputation in the area of design-behavior research. Faculty member
Daniel Stokols co-edited the leading teaching and reference resource in
environmental psychology?"The Handbook of Environmental Psychology,"
Wiley, 1987?and Sanjoy Mazumdar is a past president of the
Environmental Design Research Association, the leading scholarly
association in the environment-behavior research field. The UCI Ph.D.
program is distinguished by its interdisciplinary orientation, compared
to the more psychological or architectural orientation at other schools.
Core faculty includes Kristen Day (urban design, diversity, and
behavior), Sanjoy Mazumdar (housing, culture, and design), Ajay Garde
(urban design, sustainable growth) and Daniel Stokols (work
environments, health and environments). UCI faculty and graduate
students in design-behavior research are engaged in active research
programs including studies of the relationships between work
environments and employee well-being; urban neighborhood planning to
promote livability and support active lifestyles; culture and the
design of homes, workplaces, and cities; the role of public policy in
promoting cultural responsiveness in architecture; diversity and use of
urban environments; successful implementation of interdisciplinary
research; health and environments; technology and its impacts on work
and domestic life; and sense of community and sense of place in a
rapidly changing society.
