withPyi, Burmese activist and political refugeeTuesday, May 6th7:00 - 8:30 pmStudent Center, Emerald Bay Room BFree Burmese dinner and dance documentary presentations.In September of 2007, Burmese demonstrators, led byhundreds of monks, walked through the streets ofRangoon, protesting rising prices and loss of basicfreedoms. The junta-led Burmese government respondedviolently. Exact figures are unknown, but it isthought that more than a hundred monks and civilianswere killed during the crackdown. During thisevening, we remember their sacrifice and recommitourselves to vigilance against oppression. We alsolink movements, from Burma to Tibet to UCI, and sharehopes for peace and justice. The evening will featurethree short videos on Burma and the SaffronRevolution, talks by Pyi, a Burmese activist andpolitical refugee, discussions, and dinner featuringtraditional Burmese cuisine. We will also have, as aspecial guest, Ms. Lay Naing Ei, who will performtraditional Burmese dance.
