Field Study Spotlight: The Shea Center

What is the mission of your organization?

The Shea Center is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs.

How long has your organization been a Field Study site?

We have been a field study site for the past nine years.

Why did your organization choose to become a Field Study site?

The Shea Center values all volunteerism and was grateful to have the chance to work with UCI’s School of Social Ecology.  We have 11 internship affiliations with other universities and the quality of our UCI students has been exceptional.

How have you integrated Social Ecology students into your organization?

Social Ecology students help directly with our Shea Center clients through our therapeutic equestrian lessons, work with the horses and preparing them for therapeutic riding activities, and also helping with administrative functions that relate to our work.

What is the most valuable asset Social Ecology students bring to your organization?

We value our partnership with Social Ecology students for the consistency and focus they bring on getting to know our clients and the mission of The Shea Center.  They are socially conscious individuals and have related well to our volunteers and staff.  We have experienced these students to be mature and dependable as well as bright and helpful.
