Research Abstract
I am interested in the connection of economic stress to behavioral disorder. At the individual level I study the reciprocal relationship between changes in employment (e.g. leaving school or welfare to enter the work force or losing a job) and changes in well-being (e.g. depression, self-esteem, alcohol abuse). Combined with aggregate-level information such as the local unemployment rate, this becomes cross-level research permitting the analysis of the interaction between personal and aggregate economic variables. Such cross- level, longitudinal research requires large panel data sets, and the most recent research has analyzed the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the Epidemiologic Catchment Area files. Currently I am interested in the impacts of employment change involving not only unemployment vs employment but also the intermediate categories of underemployment as they affect depression, substance abuse, and, for working mothers, their babies' birthweight.
