Student Computing Resources
This page provides some basic information regarding computing services offered to Social Ecology students.
Webfiles is a file storage system provided by Network & Academic Computing Services (NACS) to faculty, staff and graduate students at UCI. The system provides 1 Gigabyte of disk space that allows you to store copies of important documents (e.g. homework, notes, papers, theses, dissertations, graphics). In addition to storing private files, you may also use this space to publish a personal home page and collaborate with colleagues.
There is a one time set up to use Webfiles, follow the instructions on Webfiles under "Getting Started".
Social Ecology Computing Labs
There are three computer labs available in the School:
- Social Ecology I 101, 30 computers (1 station with a scanner attached) with 1 LaserJet Black and White printer and 1 Color LaserJet printer. (View lab schedule)
- Social Ecology I 134 , 8 computers with 1 LaserJet Black and White printer.
- Social Ecology II 2316, 18 computers with 1 LaserJet Black and White printer. (View lab schedule)
All three labs are equip with computers running on Windows XP Professional, Pentium D 2.80 Ghz, 2GB of RAM, with 3.5" floppy disk drive, and USB ports accessible on the monitor and tower.
Software for all three labs include: Windows XP Professional, Adobe Reader, Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access), FireFox, Internet Explorer 7, ArcGIS, SPSS 15, SAS 9.1.2, Stata, and Stat Transfer 7.
You are not allowed to install software on any lab PC. These machines
have been set up to meet the needs of all classes and graduate students.
Lab Hours
Accessing Social Ecology I 101 and 134: You will need both a key to the Social Ecology I building and a key to 101/134 (same key) in
order to access 101 and 134 from 8:00pm until 7:00am weekdays, on
weekends, and holidays.
Accessing Social Ecology II 2316: You will need a cardkey to access Social Ecology II and 2316 from 8:00pm until 7:00am weekdays, on weekends, and holidays.
Again no key is required from 8:00am until 5:00pm.
Other computing labs: NACS has both MAC and PC labs; School of Biological Sciences and the Student Center have PC labs. You will need to have an e-mail account and will need to set up an easy access account through NACS. Also in order to do remote computing you will need an easy access account. You will need to go to Academic Computing, located in Engineering III to set up the account.
For more information, please check out UCI Open Access Labs .
Accounts: Individuals
Social Ecology Gradudate students and select Social Ecology class are given access to Social Ecology computer labs. Accounts for classes are active through the duration of the class/quarter.
Data storage: Each account is allocated a limited amount of data storage on the network M: drive - which can be seen by opening "My Computer". This drive follows you as you log in on different machines in the three labs. However, always bring a USB flash drive or use webfiles to save, back up, and transaport all data. Any files stored on the "C" dirve will be lost! Store data on the network drive at your own risk.
Password Reset - If you forget your password you can reset it here. Please note: this changes your email password for the login uses the same information from your UCI email.
To login use your UCInetID (such as UCInetID at uci.edu), Password (same as UCI email password), and in the third field select "UCI.EDU (Kerberos)."
Accounts: Research
Research accounts are usually set up by Faculty members, shared by a group of researchers and do not generally have print credits.
To login use your assigned login ID, password, and in the third field select "SOCECO."
If there is a need to reset the account password or any other related requests, please ask the appropriate Faculty member to contact Social Ecology Computing Support for the reset.
Print Credits
Graduate students are also provided with a limited amount of free printing in the labs, which may be used for academic requirements ONLY such as printing final copies of paper assignments, research reports, MA theses, and Ph.D. dissertations. Printing resources should not be used for personal use and TA work. Printing hard copies of research materials, iterative drafts, and statistical analytic output should be done sparingly. Print credits in the computer labs should also not be used to print course reading materials that are viewable on the web.
Each student is given $100 printing credits per quarter. Printing on the black printer is $0.10 per page; Printing on the color printer is $1.00 per page. This means you may print 1000 pages of black, or 100 pages of color, or some combination of both. There is an icon labeled "print balance" on the desktop of each computerlabs machine that allows you to check your current print balance. At the start of each quarter all accounts are reset to $100.
Please do not make multiple copies of documents on the printers and use the color printer sparingly. Usage of these printers is tracked and monitored.
Each Graduate Student receives one free poster per academic year. To request the use of the plotter, complete the following:
-
Complete and submit this application.
-
Have your advisor email support@soceco.uci.edu stating that he/she approves the plotter request.
-
Please allow 3 business days to schedule your request.
Plotter requests are subject to the rules below.
-
Be sure to bring your file on a CD or USB Flash drive, have it available on your M: drive, or send it via the online application form.
-
There are no "rough drafts". You are limited to one (1) printed poster of size 42"(wide) X 36"(tall).
-
Use the standard Windows fonts (Times New Roman and Arial work fine)
-
No backgrounds. Backgrounds make the poster more susceptible to fingerprints and scratches, and are very expensive to print.
-
Color: It is important to note that printed colors will be less vivid than those that you see on your computer monitor. As a rule, dark colors will print darker.
-
If there is a printing problem caused by our staff or equipment (printer error) we will re-print the poster.
-
Reprint requests due to typographical, layout, or other errors not related to our staff or equipment will be denied
Useful Hints
-
If using photographs, use 150dpi for the picture's settings. This seems to work best. Also, use the "Insert Picture" function, rather than Copy & Paste. Copy/Paste tends to leave out details that could be used to improve the quality of the picture.
-
Simple is better.
-
We do not provide poster tubes. Poster tubes are available at Kinko's.
Creating Your Poster with PowerPoint
-
Create your poster to actual size. Use Page Set-Up 42"(wide) X 36"(tall) (42" X 36"). This way you can view your file at actual size (100%) to verify resolution and quality.
-
Overly complex posters created in PowerPoint can have display and printing issues. You will have less problems if you use fewer layers and keep your design simple. Adobe Illustrator is recommended for more complex designs, but note that Adobe Illustrator is not available in our computer labs.
-
Try to use only system fonts. Arial and Times New Roman are reliable fonts.
-
Make sure that any bitmap (pixel based) images contained in your file are scanned to a high enough resolution (150 ppi at final size). Resolution higher than 150 ppi will result in excessive file sizes.
-
Do not use the transparent or semi transparent setting in the fill options window.
-
Do not fill objects like graph bars with patterns. If you must fill graphs with patterns, please do so outside of PowerPoint and insert the graph as an image.
-
If you have a presentation that contains multiple slides, you will need to consolidate the slides into one slide of size 42"(wide) X 36"(tall). Examples of consolidated poster formatted presentations are below.
Example PPT Documents
